What Is Hip Arthroscopy? How Is It Treated?

Hip arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used for the diagnosis and treatment of hip joint problems. In this article, I will provide more detailed information about hip arthroscopy.

What Is Hip Arthroscopy?

Hip arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that uses an instrument to visualize and treat structures within the hip joint. This instrument is a small tube containing a camera and light source. The tube is placed inside the hip joint, allowing for images of the joint to be viewed on a screen.

Hip arthroscopy is used to diagnose and treat various hip joint conditions, including:

  • Hip dislocation
  • Damage to the hip joint
  • Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI)
  • Bone spurs
  • Inflammation of the joint

How Is Hip Arthroscopy Performed?

Hip arthroscopy is usually performed under general anesthesia, and the patient is placed in a supine position. The procedure begins with 3-4 small incisions made in the hip area. These incisions allow for the placement of instruments used to access the hip joint.

Next, a small tube (arthroscope) containing a camera and light source is inserted through one of the incisions to visualize the structures inside the joint. At this stage, the surgeon can identify any damage within the joint and begin repairs as necessary.

Hip arthroscopy provides sufficient space for the surgeon to visualize and repair the joint using instruments. After the procedure, the incisions are closed with sutures, and the patient can typically get up a few hours later.

Recovery Process After Hip Arthroscopy

The recovery process after hip arthroscopy may vary depending on the patient’s condition and the type of procedure performed. Generally, patients are discharged the same day or the following day and are given recommendations for rest and recovery at home.

During the recovery period, patients are advised to walk to protect the joint but avoid excessive activity.

    Private Health Insurance Information

Medical procedures with private health insurance are carried out as follows:

    • If you have individual health insurance (private health insurance), you can receive a reimbursement from your insurance by submitting the invoice for the medical examination and your insurance evaluation card. Similarly, any necessary radiological and blood tests can also be claimed from the insurance with the corresponding invoice.
    • If you have hybrid insurance, since our institution does not have an agreement with SGK, you can claim the invoice amounts from your insurance based on the terms of your insurance contract. (Many complementary health insurances fall under this category. Please review your health insurance policy.)
    • If you have complementary health insurance (TSS), it will not be valid because we do not have an agreement with SGK.

The process for surgeries with private health insurance proceeds as follows (both individual and hybrid insurances are included):

    • If you require surgery, our doctor will fill out the necessary forms, and your insurance application will be processed through the hospitals we are affiliated with.
    • During the application, the costs for the hospital surgery, the materials used during the surgery, and the doctor’s surgery fee determined by the Turkish Medical Association will be submitted to the insurance for approval.
    • Once your insurance approves, the hospital processes and the material invoices are paid directly to the hospital by the insurance.
    • You will need to first pay the doctor’s fee and then submit the invoice and approval from the doctor to reclaim the amount from your insurance.
